Why we built a noise generator for focus and sleep
A free, browser-based noise generator built for the moments when you need to settle in and concentrate, or finally drift off.
Focus Hum started with a simple frustration: most "focus sound" tools either bury the audio behind a paywall, push you toward an app download, or loop the same short clip until your ear catches the seam. We wanted something you could open in a single browser tab, press play, and forget about, no account, no install, no nagging. So we built a generator that synthesizes noise in real time using the Web Audio API. Nothing is pre-recorded, which means it never repeats and never has to load.
At its core, Focus Hum plays the classic noise "colors": white noise for masking sharp, sudden sounds, pink noise for a softer and more natural wash, and brown noise for that deep, rumbling low end a lot of people find the most calming. We also added blue and violet noise for anyone masking high-pitched ringing or testing speakers. The part we're proudest of is the five-color mixer: instead of being stuck with one preset, you can blend the colors to taste, dial in volume, shape the low and high cut, and set a sleep timer so it fades out on its own. Found a blend you love? Save it as a preset or share it as a link.
If you do deep work in a noisy apartment, study next to a chatty roommate, or just think better with a steady backdrop, this is for you. It's equally at home as a sleep aid, a way to soften an open-plan office, or a calm-down sound for nap time. We write our guides honestly: noise helps a lot of people focus and sleep, but it isn't magic and it isn't medical advice, and we'd rather tell you that than oversell it.
Focus Hum is one of several free audio tools we build. If you're after something more melodic at bedtime, try the ambient drones at OmTones; if you want to experiment with focus audio of a different kind, BinauralHQ explores binaural beats. Everything we make follows the same rule: free to use, no sign-up, and it runs right in your browser.
